YOUNG JOHN STANCILL LEADS HIS FIRST LAPS AT ORANGE COUNTY SPEEDWAY
John Stancill's weekend ended much better than it began. Generator
troubles on the hauler, prevented the #20 Stancill farms team from
making the Friday practice at Orange County Speedway. After many phone
calls, a borrowed trailer, and an all night drive for Stancill's
parents; the team finally rolled into Orange County around 12:30 on
Saturday afternoon. "We had to park on the grass.", said Stancill when
asked about his parking spot. "We were so late, the front row was full,
but that was ok, we were pretty good right out of the trailer" said
Stancill.
Stancill was one of 30 cars that showed up to race the PASS event on
Saturday. This was the teams second trip to Orange County this season.
Saturday's race was a 200 lap main event with green flag pit stops.
After qualifying 11th, Stancill quickly fell in line and began a patient
march to the front. As other teams began to pit, Stancill had to wait
for another team to offer to help him. "They told me to find a friend'
said Stancill when asked about his unusual pit stop. "The PASS officials
would not let me pit in front of my trailer - they said it was too
dangerous because we were on the grass and not in line with the other
teams. So we asked a few other teams to share some space with us, but
no one wanted to help out. Finally the #76 team offered to help
me."laughed Stancill.
Stancill had worked his way up to 2nd place before pitting on lap 125.
"My brother was spotting and my crew cheif - Mark Huff was trying to
find someone to let us use their area - it was kind of a last minute
call and I had to jerk in at the last minute. It worked out ok."
Stancill remarked. Stancill emerged from the frantic pit stop in 7th
and was leading on lap 145. "My second set of tires was just not as
good'"said Stancill. "They started to give up really quick". The #44
got back in the lead with about 20 laps to go.
A caution on lap 194, forced John Stancill to restart in second on the
outside and with so few laps remaining, Stancill brought the #20
Stancill Farms chevy into a 4th place finish. "It was still a great
run!" said Stancill after the race. "This race paid $10,000 to win and
all I could think about was the money when I was leading," Stancill said
with a smile. "That was the most fun I've had in a wile
