Mooresville, NC 03/23/08- The developing “story book” career of
fifteen year old John Stancill has begun it’s next chapter. The talented young
driver from Ayden , N.C. , had never been behind the wheel of a late model stock
car until Friday. But Saturday night, he raced his way into the competitive PASS
late model race at the historic Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory , N.C. .
After destroying the competition in the INEX Legends Semi-Pro division in 2007,
the high school junior decided to make the switch to the larger full bodied cars
for 2008. This switch often takes quite a bit of time to master, but Stancill
seems to have not lost any of his dominant edge.
Up until Friday afternoon, Stancill had never laid eyes upon the car he would
navigate at the Easter Bunny 150. But one day later, he not only qualified for
the competitive event. He drove it deep into the top 5 to capture a third place
finish.
After a spin on his qualifying lap, the young driver was forced to run the
consolation race. His hard racing in the consolation event allowed him on of the
final transfer spots to get into the 30 car main event.
When the green flag fell late Saturday evening, Stancill was deep in the field
in the 26th starting position, but as the halfway point approached, he was
knocking on the door of the top 10. As the drivers neared the completion of the
event, a side by side battle between the two leaders allowed Stancill and third
place driver Zach Stroupe to close up on the two leaders for a heated finish.
Not long after, Stancill was able to slide around Stroupe to move into the third
position. Second place driver Ryan Lawler was well aware of Stancill’s presence,
but the laps ran out before Stancill could challenge for the top spot.
“We were very pleased with our finish, considering we’d never seen the car until
Friday.” stated Stancill “After the spin on our qualifying lap, we had some
concerns because we knew there was a lot of good cars that wouldn’t be making
the field, but I just went out there and took care of my car and picked them off
one at a time. I knew that after I made it into the top 10 that I had a chance
to win the race. I think this is a great kick off for what is going to be a
successful year.”
John Stancill and his #20 machine will now turn their attention to the Dillon
Motor Speedway in Dillon , SC for the Saturday April 5th running of the South
Carolina Clash 125. You can follow John Stancill during his 2008 season by
